- 8 slices bread
Bread crumbs are an essential ingredient to have in the kitchen for anyone who’s serious about cooking! Invariably, you would be called upon to use bread crumbs in the kitchen for this among other things:-
- Coating (think of chicken, fish etc),
- Soup thickening
- Stews thickening
- Stuffing
- and more…
As a matter of fact, you are likely to come across dozens and dozens of recipes through-out your life in the kitchen that call for bread crumb use.
So this makes creating your own bread crumbs at home essential unless you want to be spending money on pricey commercial bread crumbs which you could instead make from left over bread, stale bread and whatnot.
After all, making bread crumbs at home is a simple 4 step process which I’m going to show you below. Give it a go, share in the comments.
Tip:- once you have made your crumbs, ensure you store them in an airtight container to keep them moisture free.
Do This
- Get your bread ready and place it on an oven tray or in a baking tray.
- Lay the bread on your oven racks and switch on to 180 egress Celsius on grill. (I prefer the oven over the toaster as you can toast more slices at one go. But if you’re more comfortable with the toaster, go ahead and use it.
- Toast the bread until browned and golden brown,
- Place the toasted bread in a ziploc or plastic bag and using your rolling pin, bash the bread with the rolling pin until crumbs begin to form. Alternatively you may also use a blender.
- Bread crumbs ready!
If you learn better with pictures, here is the step-by-step process of making bread crumbs illustrated.
Step 1
Get your bread ready and place it on an oven tray or in a baking tray (remember this need not be fresh bread, stale bread or bread with early signs of going bad works well too).
Step 2
Lay the bread on your oven racks and switch oven on to 180 degress Celsius on grill (I prefer the oven over the toaster as you could toast more slices at one go. But if you’re more comfortable with the toaster or have not access to an oven at present but a toaster, go ahead and use it).
Step 3
Toast the bread until browned and golden brown.
Step 4
Place the toasted bread in a ziploc or plastic bag and using your rolling pin, bash the bread with the rolling pin until crumbs begin to form. Alternatively you may also use a blender (toss your toasted bread into a blender and crush it).
As shown below, your bread crumbs have a resemblance of a finely crushed texture almost like brown sugar granules. Store in an air-tight container and use your crumbs as and when needed.
